Salvete! – A Warm Welcome!
Cistercian Monastery Priorat Neuzelle
“How many of monks are still here in Neuzelle?”
We hear this question from time to time. We are already eight solemnly professed monks, one temporarily professed monk and one novice, although we are currently still living provisionally in the Catholic rectory and an additional rented apartment.
More than 200 years after the abolition of the historic abbey by the Prussian state, there has been an active Cistercian monastery in Neuzelle again since September 2018 – the only one in the state of Brandenburg!
In 1817, the Cistercian Abbey of Neuzelle was forcibly dissolved after 550 years and the entire monastery complex and its lands were nationalized. Today, the historic monastery complex and around 11,200 hectares of land are owned by the state-run Stift Neuzelle Foundation.
None of it belongs to the Cistercian order or the Catholic Church.
That’s why we’re starting from scratch all over again – build with us!
